Embrace Your Fears and Break the Ties That Bind You

By Melanie Channell

Fear happens to everyone, and it is no wonder with the t. v. news, the internet, job stress, family issues, and our lives seeming to speed up faster and faster. With the daily information overload we’re bombarded with, we are being collectively programmed to think that the boogie man is around every corner ready to jump out at us. A lot of us think that this onslaught doesn’t affect us very much, but in the long term it does. It affects our mental, emotional, spiritual, and also our physical health.

Fear is a natural physical response to danger. Our bodies react to our perception of danger by releasing the hormones adrenaline and cortisol from the adrenal glands. This speeds up our heart rate, slows digestion, shunts blood flow to major muscle groups, and over time can weaken the immune system.

Fortunately, there are ways to combat the onslaught of negativity and/or stress that causes our fear hormones to rage out of control.

Some of the ways to help keep fears under control are:

  1. Take deep controlled breaths
  2. Limit watching the news and buying into propaganda
  3. Meditation – Prayer -Affirmations
  4. Take walks outdoors – Yoga
  5. Aromatherapy
  6. Acupressure – Energy work

Listen to soft musicMy Personal StoryFor quite a few years, I wrestled with the idea that my life purpose was healing and teaching. I kept up a hectic pace in the corporate world (which I totally resented), and it was slowly sucking the life right out of me.I had this terrible fear that even though I was getting angelic messages and constant prodding’s from source, that I was not going to make it financially unless I worked full-time. I was also hearing “You won’t make it” messages from other well-meaning people in my life. This fear paralyzed me at times and kept me swimming in doubt and anxiety.

It wasn’t until I embraced fear and let it fuel the fire in my belly instead of stopping me in my tracts, that I learned that fear can also be your ally. Now, I have a part-time job that I enjoy and the time and energy to do what I feel called to do. At some point fear became the fuel that pushed me out of my comfort zone and into having faith that god will provide. I am not saying that I don’t ever go into fear, because I do, but I don’t live there anymore.

Fear has been a friend to me at times, and other times a foe, but all of my personal experiences with fear have taught me life lessons that I am eternally grateful for.

Don’t let fear shut you down, let it be the catalyst that wakes you up and fuels your fire!
